ABOUT THE PRESENTATION

This webinar concentrates of the structural transformations associated with Industry 4.0, and more recently Industry 5.0, and their implications for strategies of skills formation.

Over the past decade one of the central concepts of industrial reorganization and technological intensification of production processes for sustained innovation in the EU has been Industry 4.0. The concept, broadly defined as a techno-economic paradigm, refers to the technological evolution from embedded systems to cyber-physical systems, a paradigm shift from centralized to decentralized production of goods and services. It involves the organization of production processes based on technology and devices autonomously communicating with each other along the value chain. Yet, the transformations associated with Industry 4.0 have multifaceted effects that extend far beyond technological change in the production process.

A transformed industry has a transformative impact on society, the composition of new critical skills, the energy systems and portfolios supporting social and productive activities, and environmental sustainability. These are the dominant themes of the concept of Industry 5.0, broadly defined as a socio-technical paradigm. Industry 5.0 signifies a growing recognition that social and environmental needs must be better integrated into technology and economic development. Given the complexity of the technologies and the scale of the challenges involved, the prospects of Industry 5.0 will largely depend on the adoption of a systemic approach involving all key stakeholders underpinned by new strategies of skills development – both at the level of work and that of civil society.
